where acquired by the present owner
Ignaz Stern is known to have studied with Carlo Cignani in Bologna, before settling in Rome in circa 1700. He completed an fresco in the Lateran begun by Giovanni Odazzi. Stern also executed easel paintings of devotional character such as the present work. Stern’s work was also inspired by the work of Carlo Maratta and indirectly by that of Correggio.
