Lot No. 607

Antwerp School, circa 1620-30

Antwerp School, circa 1620-30 - Old Master Paintings

Study of the head of an old woman,
oil on canvas, 49.4 x 40 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, The Netherlands

The present composition’s loose painterly style and the lively facial expression of the old woman point to this being a study from life. The same model was drawn in black and red chalk by Jacob Jordaens in Two studies of the head of an old woman (circa 1620/30, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, see exhibition catalogue, Jordaens en de Antieken, Brussels, Kassel, 2012, no. 76, ill.). As pointed out by Justus Lange, Jordaens’s study frequently served as a reference for paintings in his workshop, as the woman appears in various versions of the Satyr and the Boar and the Triumph of Bacchus, as well as Jupiter and Mercury in the House of Philemon and Baucis and other compositions.
