A rare “Digital chaise longue”, designed by Philipp Aduatz in 2018, - Design

manufactured by Philip Aduatz in collaboration with incremental3d in 2019, 3D-printed concrete with white cement, reinforced with carbon fibre and steel bolts as well as epoxy cement. Dimensions: height ca. 83 cm, length ca. 222 cm, depth

c. 76 cm.

No. 4 from the limited edition of 8 examples plus 4 épreuves d’artiste and 2 prototypes. The prototype of this series was presented at Ventura Future during Milan Design Week in 2018.(MHA)

The digital chaise longue resulted from a collaboration between Viennese product designer Philipp Aduatz and the Austrian start-up company incremental3d (Innsbruck). Its sculptural design is achieved by means of an innovative, digital production technology. This makes it possible to print extremely detailed concrete geometries in 3D within a very short period of time. The aim is to use the technology developed by incremental3d for a complex free-form design by Philipp Aduatz and thus to demonstrate new possibilities in the creation of complex shapes applied to furniture design. This project also aims to show the synergy between Philipp Aduatz’s experimental and scientific approach and a company that has developed a new technology and is looking for fields of application for it. For the creation of the “Digital chaise longue”, a three-dimensional concrete base plate was first printed in 3D. Then the entire geometry was printed onto the plate in less than an hour. In order to ensure sufficient tensile strength, carbon fibres are added in sensitive areas. The seat was painstakingly handcrafted. This initiative aims to show that artisanal handicrafts and digital technologies can be combined in an innovative approach in the twenty-first century.
