Markus Lüpertz *
(born in Liberec in 1941)
Untitled, from the series: Männer ohne Frauen - Parsifal, 1994, artist monogram, oil on canvas, 162 x 130 cm, artist frame
Provenance:
Private Collection, Switzerland - directly acquired from the artist
In the 1990s, Markus Lüpertz worked on the series “Männer ohne Frauen – Parsifal” [Men without women, Parsifal], one of his largest thematically linked groupings. “Männer ohne Frauen – Parsifal: the formulation is possibly nothing other than a cleverly laid trail that leads nowhere, providing the painter with a pretext and legitimising his work, an imposingly powerful flood of images given a title that is as ambitious as it is ambiguous, even consciously deceptive.” (Armin Zweite, in: exhibition catalogue, Kunstsammlung NRW, Markus Lüpertz, Gemälde – Skulpturen,
Düsseldorf 1996, p. 176)
The series is an eloquent example of Lüpertz’s love of playing with contradictions and misconceptions, his concept of leaving every image as a secret, offering possible interpretations but not making them absolutely necessary.
