Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi - Antiques

(Edo 1839-1892) and/or Toshimitsu ‘Tôeizan Monjgonchi’ (The fire of Monju Halle in the temple of Tôeizan on the 15th day of the 5th month), triptych, nishiki-e, publisher: Yorozuya Magobei, woodblock cutter: âta Hidekatsu (Horikô Hidekat-su), dated 1874 (Meiji 7/12th month), signed âju Taiso Yoshitoshi,... Toshimitsu. The artist, Toshimitsu is not clearly identifiable, since it is possible that several of Yoshitoshi’s pupils bore this name, such as, for instance, Kobayashi Toshimitsu and Fukushima Toshimitsu). (See, article on Yoshitoshi, in: The Lavenberg Collection of Japanese Prints). The former was an early pupil who used this name between 1875 and 1876. He was mentioned as an assistant on sheets dating from the mid-1870s, and he designed a series of small sheets depicting battle scenes in 1875. It is possible that he also employed the name, Toshimine. He also designed prints on the theme of the Satsuma Rebellion. He was mentioned as being dead on Yoshitoshi’s monument, each sheet 36.5 x 25.3 cm, cropped along the contour line to lower margin of all sheets, the right-hand sheet also cropped to the right-hand margin, very good impression and colours, (CT)
