The cross-shaped church was built in the 14th century and since then has expanded to its present size.
Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove specialised in depicting city vistas and church interiors stylistically influenced by Romanticism. The figural staffage in the foreground, executed in a fine painting style, enlivens the scene, with the tower of the church rising up in the centre in front of the bright clouds.
