Lot No. 54

Giovanna Garzoni

Giovanna Garzoni - Old Master Paintings I

(Ascoli Piceno 1600–1670 Rome)
Two butterflies and another insect,
tempera on vellum, 10.3 x 12.1 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 21 April 2010, lot 79;
where aquired by the present owner

The present work can be compared to two studies by Giovanna Garzoni in her sketch book under nos. A 68 (c. 12) and A69 (c. 13) (see G. Casale, Giovanna Garzoni ‘Insigne miniatrice’ 1600–1670, Rome 1991, p. 128, no. A 68 and A 69).

In A 68 (c. 13) (see op. cit. Casale, 1991, p. 128, no. A 69) a similar butterfly is depicted in the opposite direction, in a mirror image to that represented in this work, while the lizard is similar to that depicted in lot 53. The particular style of shading apparent in this work, executed with a technique of black and white pointillism, is consistent with that used by the artist in her sketchbook in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome (see op. cit. Casale, 1991, p. 121). It is possible that this work was once part of a similar sketchbook.
