Lot No. 76

Venetian School, circa 1700

[Saleroom Notice]
Venetian School, circa 1700 - Old Master Paintings I

The Giovedi grasso festival with the Forze d’Ercole in the Piazetta, Venice,
oil on canvas, 134 x 168 cm, framed

Saleroom Notice:

An attribution to Alessandro Piazza (active in 1665-1727, and in Venice 1691-1700) has been confirmed on the basis of a monogram on lot 75: 1694/Ao. Pa./F.

Provenance:
Aristocratic collection;
where acquired by the present owner

The present painting depicts a summa of the Venetian carnival entertainments in the Piazzetta: in the foreground the caccia al toro; in the middle-ground there is a castle shaped ‘macchina’ or theatrical structure for fireworks, beside which the human pyramid of the Forze d’Ercole rises up, in which the Castellani and Nicolotti competed.

The attention of the crowd is drawn by the acrobatic ‘svolo della colombina’ during which a man decended a vertiginous tightrope stretched from the Capanile to the balcony of the Palazzo Ducale, in order to pay homage to the doge.
