Bartholomeus Bruyn II was the son of the celebrated portrait painter Barthel Bruyn I. He is considered the last master of the School of Cologne. A signed portrait of the Abbot Peter Ulner (dated 1560, Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn) was the basis for attributing a series of portraits to the artist, including the present pair.
