Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot

Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot - Old Master Paintings II

(Utrecht 1586–1666)
The Peasant Lawyer,
signed and dated upper left: Joos Corneliz Drooch Sl... fecit/Anno 1625,
oil on canvas, laid down on panel, 68 x 100 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Tajan, Paris, 25 March 2015, lot 67;
Private collection, Berlin

The present composition is a rare example by Joost van Droochsloot that does not show his typical renderings of a village with figures on a road.

The scene depicts a lawyer’s office with a document on a table that reads: ‘Ick wil naer recht ofte / onrecht vraeghen / Als ick het verken / mach inde katel jaeghen’ which translates into English: ‘I want to ask about justice and injustice if I can chase the pig into the kettle.’ This is an Old Dutch proverb that refers to the lawyer sitting at the table. He is willing to execute his lawful duties if he can keep for himself the possessions the peasants bring him. Visible on the left there is a pig that is literally chased into the cauldron. Droochsloot ridicules the profession of a lawyer in this courtyard scene.
