The present painting is a variant of a composition commissioned from Francois Boucher by Queen Louise Ulrika of Sweden. The artist, whether he was active in Boucher’s studio or working at the royal court in Stockholm, knew that painting in the original as Boucher’s prime version was cut on all four sides only a few months after arriving in Sweden. The present painting represents Boucher’s original composition, and must therefore have been executed in the immediate circle of Boucher or immediately upon arrival in Stockholm.
