Immediately following the tragedy of the Great War, Balla observed the changing seasons and studied the colours of both the sea (in Viareggio in September 1919) and the trees of Villa Borghese. In this roundel we find autumnal colours – orange, ochre – chasing each other against the blue sky and green meadows. The colourful leaves of the Roman Indian summers chase each other in the purple-blue sky and on the green of the meadows. We find the same chromatic richness in 1918, in Balla’s triptych of the Seasons where, enclosed within bizarre frames, he depicts the three seasons (winter is excluded) most dear to him: the light green of spring, the yellow of summer, and the orange of autumn.
