Christian van Couwenbergh
(Delft 1604–1667 Cologne)
The Laughing Fishmonger,
oil on canvas, 106 x 128 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
It has been suggested that the fish in the present composition may have been painted by Abraham van Beyeren (1620/21–1690). Another painting by Christian van Couwenbergh with a sleeping female fishmonger, probably a pendant to the present work, was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 17 June 1996, lot 199.
