Literature:

The present drawing shows the “Torre delle Milizie” next to Trajan’s column in Rome. It is one of the oldest towers in the city and was erected in the 13th century for Pope Gregory IX. The name of the tower alludes to the soldiers’ quarters nearby. A comparable drawing of the “Torre delle Milizie” and the Pantheon in the background can be seen in an etching by Willem van Nieulandt II (1584-1634; Hollstein 7), which may have served as a model image.
