The present drawing is a first design for the Assumption of the Virgin in the upper part of the painting “The Madonna in the glory surrounded by eight holy martyrs ” in the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta di Orte. Two further compositional sketches which anticipate the group of martyrs in the lower part of the painting (see lot 151) and two detail studies of the Madonna’s head are known (Tellini Perina 2000, fig. 16.1–16.5). A bozzetto for the painting is in Italian private property.
