Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger

From his childhood onwards Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger demonstrated his graphic talent and therefore received an education as a drawing teacher. He taught at the St. Anna drawing school and at the Zollersche secondary school in Vienna-Neubau. In 1815 he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts where he lectured from 1816 onwards. In 1817/18 he made a journey to Italy for study reasons. In Dresden Schödlberger copied works of C. Lorrain and J. v. Ruysdael. Apart from landscape painting he also devoted his work to genre painting and was also active as an etcher. In 1821 Schödlberger was commissioned by Emperor Francis I. to paint „The Traunfall bei Gmunden“ (Traun Falls near Gmunden - see: Claudia Wöhrer, Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts, Bestandskatalog der Österreichischen Galerie in Wien, Vol. 4, Vienna 2000, p. 54).
