Thomas Ender

When in 1811 Thomas Ender travelled to Salzburg for the first time the view of the Salzburg mountains would deeply impress him and root in his memory and thus lay the foundation of his passion for mountain painting. In his autobiography of 1834 Ender reported in retrospect: “... dieses reiche Land an malerischen Bildern belebte mich mit ihren großen Gebirgs-Scenen, dass ich glaube, erst hier lernte ich die Natur zuerst sehen.” (... this country rich in painterly pictures with large mountain scenes stimulated me and I think it was there that I learned to see nature for the first time) (After Stefanie Hoffmann-Gudehus, in: Exhibition catalogue Albertina, Von der Schönheit der Natur, Die Kammermaler Erzherzog Johanns, Vienna 2015, p. 172.)
