Willem de Famars Testas was a pupil of Jacobus Everhardus Josephus van den Berg. He studied at the Academy of The Hague. Between 1858–1860 de Famars Testas travelled to Egypt, stayed in Thebes and executed numerous drawings and watercolours. After his return to Utrecht he devoted his art to Orientalism; in 1868 he travelled in the company of Jean-Léon Gerome not only again to Egypt but also to Palestine and Syria. In 1872 he moved to Brussels where he continued to dedicate himself to Oriental painting but also to history subjects. He created many illustrations for different books. In 1885 de Famars Testas returned to the Netherlands.
