Julius Leblanc Stewart
(Philadelphia 1855–1919 Paris)
Flowers from the Garden, signed, dated J. L. Stewart (18)80, oil on canvas laid down on board, 40 x 29 cm, framed
Provenance:
European Private Collection.
Although Julius Stewart was born in Philadelphia, USA, he spent most of his life in Paris. He became interested in painting at a young age, perhaps inspired by the patronage of his father, a wealthy sugar manufacturer who mainly supported artists of the Barbizon School. Stewart studied under Jean-Léon Gerome and at the École des Beaux-Arts. As a painter, he moved in Paris’ elegant and artistic circles throughout his life. This is also reflected in his oeuvre, which offers a snapshot of life during the Belle Époque.
