Lot No. 43 -

Flemish School, circa 1650

[Saleroom Notice]
Flemish School, circa 1650 - Old Master Paintings

The Temptation (Gen. 3, 1–7),
oil on canvas, 159.5 x 109.5 cm, framed

The present painting is based on Dürer’s Adam and Eve print, on a painting with the same subject by Peter Paul Rubens in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (1628/29), and on Lucas Cranach’s I painting in the Courtauld Institute in London. The general composition is very close to Dürer, the serpent with the human head and the apples on the tree resemble Rubens. Borrowed from Lucas Cranach is the crouching lion.

We are grateful to Rainer Stüwe for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. In his opinion it is the work of a Flemish artist, executed in the middle of the 17th century, who had seen paintings from German Renaissance artists before.

Saleroom Notice:

We are grateful to Vilmos Tátrai for suggesting an alternative attribution to Aureliano Milani (Bologna 1675–1749 Rome) for the present painting. He believes that this works relates to a series of biblical scenes including those in the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest (inv. nos.  9983 and 9984).
