Dirck Hals
(Haarlem 1591–1656)
A merry company in an interior,
oil on panel, 41 x 79 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, France, until 2017
Unlike his brother, the portraitist Frans Hals, Dirck specialised in ‘conversation pieces’, typically small-scale ‘Merry Companies’ (Dutch: Gezelschapjes) of which the present composition is a fine example. A contemporary rhetorician, Samuel Ampzing, fêted both brothers in his ‘In Praise of Haarlem’, lauding Dirck in particular for painting his figures ‘purely’.
