The present work by Dominicus Waerdigh dates from his Plön period. From 1766 Waerdigh worked as the court painter to the widowed Duchess Christiane Irmgardis zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (née Countess Reventlow, 1711–1769). She and her late husband Friedrich Karl (1729–1761) developed Plön from a provincial small town to an elegant and cultivated residence, as may be seen from the artistic output for the town, such as the present refined composition.
