Giovanni Maria Morandi

Giovanni Maria Morandi - Old Master Paintings

(Florence 1622–1717 Rome)
Portrait of Livio Odescalchi (1652–1713), Duke of Bracciano, Ceri and Sirmium, full-length, wearing armour,
oil on canvas, 221 x 193 cm, framed

We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a digital photograph.

Giovanni Maria Morandi was born and trained in Florence but was prevalently active in Rome as a portraitist, attaining recognition for his works such as the present painting.

Livio Odescalchi, was the nephew of Benedetto Odescalchi, Pope Innocent XI, and he fought in the battle of Vienna in 1683 when the Holy League defeated the Turks besieging the city. In 1689 Livio Odescalchi was appointed general of the Santa Romana Chiesa and in the same year, on account of his loyalty to the Habsburgs, he was created an Imperial prince of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Leopold I; subsequently, in 1713, Charles III conferred upon him the Order of the Golden Fleece. A youthful portrait of Livio Odescalchi by Jacob Ferdinand Voet, is conserved in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore and provides confirmation of the identification of the sitter in the present painting.
