Simon de Vos and Workshop
(Antwerp 1603–1676)
The Continence of Scipio,
oil on canvas, 197 x 170 cm, framed
Provenance:
Minderop collection, Cologne (until 1861);
Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne, 1861–1943/44, as a donation (according to an old label on the stretcher with the inventory number 1457 of the museum from 1925);
subsequently sold from the museum’s collection;
Private collection, Germany
Fred Meijer suggested the attribution of the present painting to Simon de Vos. He dates it to the 1660s and because of the size he presumes a cooperation of different hands of the workshop.
