“This watercolour depicts the entrance to the small harbour of the fishing village of Dangast in the Jade Bay. Franz Radziwill settled there in 1921/23 on the advice of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and bought a house that was to become his home and workplace for the rest of his life. On the right is a stretch of oak-covered ‘geest’ landscape (the only one on the German North Sea coast) reaching down to the beach. On the left are two crab fishing boats with their typical nets. The sky displays those mysterious signs that made Franz Radziwill art history’s ‘master of magical realism’.’’
