A “Kassena Horseman” cabinet object, designed by Dokter and Misses

A “Kassena Horseman” cabinet object, designed by Dokter and Misses - Design First

(Adriaan Hugo & Katy Taplin), 2015, South Africa, beechwood, hand-painted ornamentation in black, signed, height 165 cm, width 165 cm, depth 83 cm. (DRAX)

No. 1 from the limited edition of eight, all of which are hand-painted.

The geometric lozenge and zigzag patterns are inspired by the art of the Kassena people living in the borderland between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin are the couple behind Johannesburg’s Dokter and Misses. Inspired by the idiosyncrasies of their surroundings, their modernist furniture pieces featuring angular lines have a boldly upbeat energy. Building on their revered “Kassena” series, named after the Kassena people as an ode to the architecture constructed by men and hand-painted by women, the Horseman bench-cabinet has two parts, one fitting over the other like a man riding a horse. One side serves as a chair with a backrest and the other is designed as a two-seater bench. It has a fold-out desk, four drawers on two different planes, and a secret compartment.
