Jehiryusai Hiroshige

Jehiryusai Hiroshige - Asian Art, Works of Art and Furniture

(1797-1858) Ueno sannai Tsuki no matsu (Moon Pine at Sannai, sheet title left next to the series title cartouche in square cartouche) from the series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (Hundred Views of Edo (series title in the upper right in red longitudinal cartouche), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature (lower left in red longitudinal cartouche): Hiroshige ga, censor seal (upper outer margin on the right, round): aratame (approved), date seal (left next to the censor seal, oval): snake 8 (1857), publisher’s seal (bottom left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. In my opinion, the present sheet made available to me as a photograph was printed from the original woodblocks (a wood grain can be seen in the sky, which also occurs in the original woodblocks). Compared to the first impression, the present sheet lacks the green overprint in the branch at top. Conversely, the dark blue bokashi in the middleground of the water matches the first impression. The trees on the horizon are not overprinted in green, the pine needles are not printed in two shades of grey. The bokashi technique is missing in the leaf cartouche. The print and colours are good. The outer margin of the sheet has been cropped. A horizontal fold runs through the middle of the sheet. Along the fold are several small stains, attached to support, mounted, 35.6 x 23.7 cm (sheet size), The print condition of the sheet available to me largely corresponds to the print in the British Museum (1906,1220, 0.715), (CT)
