Florentine School, 15th Century

Florentine School, 15th Century - Old Master Paintings

Madonna and Child,
oil on panel, 66 x 48.5 cm, framed

Technical report by Gianluca Poldi:

IR reflectography images show a carefully outlined underdrawing, made with a small brush, accompanied by a subtle hatched drawing used to define the shadows, particularly in the Virgin’s red dress made of red lake. Some corrections can be seen along some profiles of the figures and in the Virgin’s clothes. The spectral signatures of the pigments examined by vis-RS on many points before cleaning, and the features of the painted surface and pigments examined by optical microscopy (magnification 230x), are typical of the Florentine palette and artistic practice of the fifteenth century. A copper-based blue and green can be noted in many areas (probably azurite and malachite, but it is not possible to exclude that lapis lazuli was used in some areas), such as in the grey-purple balustrade, as well as a carmine-type red lake, coccid-derived, in the Virgin’s red dress, lead white, ochre and earths.
