Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai (1760-1849) - Asiatics, Works of Art and furniture

Yamashiro Arashiyama Togetsukyo (The Bridge Crossed by the Moon at Arashiyama in Yamashiro Province), from the series: "Shokoku meikyô kiran" (Rare Views of Famous Bridges in the Provinces), nishiki-e, signature: zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (also translated: saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu). The signature is located on the left next to the series and sheet title cartouche. An early edition can be seen in Calza, Gian Carlo: Hokusai, Berlin 2006, p. 323, no. V.47.6 (Honolulu Academy of Arts). The sheet in the British Museum no. 1906,1220,0.561 (lower left corner repaired), shows thoroughly coloured water in the bokashi at the lower margin. The sheet available to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, differs from the one in the British Museum essentially in that the lower dark blue horizontal stripes in the water have been removed. The sheet shows shifted colour boundaries and losses. For the printing, stronger colours than before were used and the colour plate was partly varied. The sheet shows a longitudinal fold in the middle (not backed). The latest state is a version whose black plate has been shortened on all sides and shows an added black frame (Katsushika HOKUSAI: Catalogue Raisonné-The Complete Work, 4th state, ref FJB7c), attached to support, 25.6 x 37.4 cm,(CT)
