Lot No. 76

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Asiatics, Works of Art and furniture

Shinano, Sarashina tagoto no tsuki, Kyôdaisan (The Moon Reflected in the Rice Fields), from the series: “Rokuj meisho zue” (The Sixty-Odd Provinces), nishiki-e, signed: Hiroshige hitsu, publisher: Koshimuraya Heisuke (Koshihei), block cutter: Yokokawa Takejirô, dated 1853 (Kaei 6, month 8). The moon high above Mount Kyôdai is reflected in the rice fields in the valley of the Chikuma River. The Chôraku temple further up on the right, is a famous place for moon watching. According to Marije Jansen, Hiroshiges Reise in den ca. Sechzig Provinzen, Amsterdam 2004, p. 78, the present sheet is a late print. This can be seen, among other things, in the almost continuous blue of the sky, the lack of black bokashi on the horizon, the deep blue water of the rice fields, and the red-brown (instead of grey-brown) rice terraces. The sheet is not quite full-margined, less than half of the censor seals Murata/Kinugasa are visible, some foxing, glue spots at the back of the upper margin, 36 x 24.5 cm (overall dimensions), (CT)
