Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Asiatics, Works of Art and furniture

Sôshû Miura no kaijô
(The Lake near Miura in the Sagami Province) Sôshû Sagami (title in the upper right red cartouche), (title in the upper right red cartouche), from the series: "Fuji sanrûrokkei" (The 36 Views of Mount Fuji, lower right in the upper right red cartouche), signature: Hiroshige ga (in the lower left red cartouche, publisher Tsutaya Kichizô (Kôeidô, lower left in the image), dated 1858 (horse 4, above the publisher's seal).
According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present sheet made available to him was a contemporary impression printed from the original woodblocks. A wood grain visible in the sky and a notch in the left border line near the upper margin of the signature cartouche are typical signs of original prints. The sheet still shows bokashi in the mountain tops before Fuji. The flat headland in the foreground was printed in two colours. The sky and the water have graded colours. The Fuji is overprinted with grey in bokashi technique from below. Its outline shows no interruptions. This print shares all of the aforementioned features with early impressions. However, the signature cartouche shows a gap at its left edge, which is due to shrinkage of the red ink plate caused by protracted use. The outlines of both red cartouches also show partial interruptions. In the series title cartouche, the white gap has been subsequently covered with red paint. The green above the cliff on the right is printed in one colour only (originally two colours). The colours are slightly faded. The impression has a good quality.
The sheet is stained, with full margins. Even later prints (partly) dispensed with the bokashi in the mountain tops. The outline of Fuji is interrupted, and the signature cartouche was occasionally printed in green (see MAK, Vienna, BI 17426-2-18), on the other hand the British Museum no. 1902, 0212, 0.396.18 shows an early print, 36 x 24,4 cm (overall dimensions), attached to support, mounted, (CT)
