Asakusa Kinryzan Temple in Asakusa, in clouded square cartouche at left near the series title cartouche), from the series: “Meisho Edo hyakkei” (One Hundred Views of Edo), signed (in red longitudinal cartouche at lower right of the image): Hiroshige hitsu (also read Hiroshige ga by others), publisher's seal (at lower left outer margin): uo egg (Uoya Eikichi), censor seal (round, at upper right outer margin): aratame, date seal (oval, to left of censor seal: dragon 7 (1856). According to Gordon Friese, this is a late variant of the original motif, in which, among other things, colour blocks were swapped (not, however, the base plate). Originally, the base plate was dyed gray, not black like the print available to Gordon Friese. The sky does not become brighter towards the bottom here. The sky block, which also forms the lower grey cross border of the motif, is still the original one. Without light blue finish at the lower snow edge. In the middle temple building, the lanterns are overprinted red (instead of remaining bright coloured). The red plate for the gate on the left and the temple buildings in the middle ground was replaced (different grain in the gate; different cut of the plate in the middle temple building). The character for bridge in the large lantern is no longer broadly cross-striped in light grey (swollen lines in the black plate of the character). Its base colour is more purple-brownish-grey than red. The dark green block was replaced. Therefore, the cartouche is clouded differently and the person to the right of the group of trees on the left no longer has a kimono half covered with snow. The second person from the left with overprinted kimono. The sheet shows staple holes to the right margin. Overall the sheet is full-margined. Around the publisher's seal the margin has been partly lost. The printing and colour condition is good considering the replaced block. Sources (in order of printing history): Museum of Fine Arts, Boston 11.16695 (frühere Version), The Metropolitain Museum of Art, N. Y. JP2519 (earlier version), Edo-Tokyo Museum 83200100 (earlier version), slightly stained, 36.3 x 24.5 cm, (CT)
