After John Flaxman

After John Flaxman - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1755-1826)
Scenes from the Odyssey of Homer, a set of 15 drawings after John Flaxman, after the engraving by Tommaso Piroli and William Blake (ca. 1795-1817), pen and brown ink, on laid paper, each 27,5 x 39 cm and one sheet 22,3 x 38,5 cm, unmounted, unframed, (15), (Sch)

Provenance:
Private property, Austria.

During his sojourn in Italy from 1787 onwards, Flaxman developed a new style of outline drawings, which he chose for illustrations of famous literary works by Homer and Aischylos for private patrons. In 1793 he executed drawings for Homer’s Iliad, which were engraved by Tommaso Piroli and William Blake and were published in Italy, France and Great Britain. The present drawings may be copies after prints which may derive from an artist of the first half of the 19th century.
