(1702-1789)
Portrait of Empress Maria Theresa with a diadem, and in a dress with precious stones and wearing a reddish stoat cape, watercolour, gouache on paper, 5,5 x 7,5 cm, framed, (Hu)
Jean Etienne Liotard sojourned in Vienna several times between 1743-1748, in order to execute portraits of the Imperial family in oil, pastel and miniature (vellum and enamel). He was joined by his assistants Peter Kobler who was Austrian and Jean Adam Serre who came from Geneva like the master himself. The greyish-green shading in the main parts of the miniature which were executed with short brushstrokes rather than with tiny dots are typical for Liotard’s painting manner. Compare the representations of Empress Maria Theresa in: Robert Keil, Die Porträtminiaturen des Hauses Habsburg, Wien 1999, particularly Cat. No. 30, p. 42.
