Artist of the family of Antonio Bencini, Vienna, ca. 1780
Portrait of Archduke and later Emperor Francis II. wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, watercolour, gouache on ivory, 6 x 5 cm, in a gilded brass frame, (Hu)
Subject to species protection (ASA).
In the present miniature the Archduke is wearing a fashionable suit and the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he had received at birth due to his position as firstborn son. In the accounting books of the Imperial chamber offices the name Bencini appears again and again far into the 1780s. The Imperial collection of miniatures is preserving a portrait of Empress Maria Ludovica (Robert Keil, Die Porträtminiaturen des Hauses Habsburg, Vienna 1999, Cat. 180), which is signed "Bencini jun.". Several members of the Bencini family, whose single identities cannot be retraced today, may have worked for the Imperial court. From invoices by Antonio Bencini we know for example that he had a large family but very little income. See: J. Fleischer, Das kunstgeschichtliche Material der Geheimen Kammerzahlamtsbüchern, Vienna 1932, Vol. I, p. 128, 159.)
