Lot No. 69

Julius Sigismund Röder

Julius Sigismund Röder - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Berlin 1824-1860)
Resting on the Way Home, signed, dated Julius Röder 1853, inscribed on the reverse J. Röder.1853, oil on canvas, 44.5 x 36 cm, framed, (KN)

Provenance:
Private Collection Germany, for three generations.

Not many works by the Berlin painter Julius Sigismund Röder are known today and so the present lot is a rarity in the art market. Röder, who specialised in genre paintings, was highly esteemed by his contemporaries. The German emperor, for example, owned a painting of a young grape seller in traditional costume in the Berlin City Palace. Steel engravings were also made based on several of Röder’s motifs. The scene of brushwood gatherers shown here by no means glorifies the tough life of the “common people,” but it is captivating because of the emotional warmth between the grandfather, who gets up after a short rest, and the grandchild, who supports him with a touching gesture as he stands up. (KN)
