Lot No. 617

Johann Hamza

Johann Hamza - 19th Century Paintings

(Teltsch 1850–1927 Vienna)
The Bowling Alley, signed J. Hamza Vienna, oil on panel, 49 x 71.5 cm, framed

Compare:
Dorotheum Vienna, 10. December 2018, lot 295 (sketch, The bowling alley).

The great strength of the Viennese painter Johann Hamza were small-scale genre scenes with figures dressed in the elegant and playful costumes of the Rococo period. Not only was he able to translate the characteristic textures of silk and velvet into the medium of painting, he also composed his scenes with a subtle sense of humor that elicits a smile from the viewer. His works can thus be aptly described as cabinet pieces.
The present lot is a rare example of his work in a larger format. He invites the viewers to let their gaze wander over the beautiful clothing of the figures and follow their small interactions that enliven the scene around the bowling lane. (KN)
