Giovanni Paolo Panini

Giovanni Paolo Panini - Old Master Paintings II

(Piacenza 1691–1765 Rome)
Mariners rescuing a young boy adrift at sea in a basket,
oil on canvas, 44 x 70.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, France;
art market, Paris;
where acquired by the present owner

This painting may represent an episode from the childhood of Perseus, son of Danae and Zeus. Danae’s father Acrisius locked her up in a bronze chamber after the oracle’s announcement that he would be killed by his daughter’s son. Zeus desired her and impregnated her in the guise of a golden shower. When Acrisius discovered the child, he placed Danae and Perseus in a chest and set them adrift at sea. They were, however, carried safely to the island of Seriphos by the help of Poseidon, where they were offered refuge by the fisherman Dictys.

This subject matter, entirely without architecture, is without parallel in the oeuvre of Panini. However, the handling is fully characteristic of the artist and appears to date to the 1730s. The painting may have served as a study or as part of a set of which the other components have not, as yet, been identified.
