Totsuka, yama-michi yori Fuji kanbo or "Totsuka Sando yori Fuji chobo" (View of Mount Fuji from a Mountain Path), sheet no. 6 from the "Gojusan tsugi meisho zue" series (Famous Views of the 53 Stations, also known as Vertical Tokaido), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige hitsu, publisher Tsutaya Kichizo (Kokeido), aratame censor seal (Hare 7), dated 1855 (Ansei 2, month 7), compare details and sheet, MFA, Boston, acc. no. 11.30256: both sheets show a slightly retracted segment in the border line at the level of the date seal, slightly visible wood grain at the top center in the blue of the sky, and two interruptions in the descending line of the left hill. The retracted segment in the perimeter line is also visible in sheet no. 1915,0823, 0.727 from the British Museum. The present sheet is probably a slightly later version of the aforementioned sheet from Boston: the line of the trees are pressed slightly wider, the colours slightly flatter especially compared to the early impression acc. no. RES.48.29 with tricolour title cartouche and soft and light design of the purple evening sky. Horizontal centrefold visible, also backed at the margin on both sides on the reverse, attached at the upper corners on the back, minimally spotted and wavy, full margins, 36.6 x 24.1 cm, mounted, framed,(CT)
