Shitaya Hirokoji (The Hirokoji Street in Shitaya), sheet no. 13 from the series "Meisho Edo hyakkei", nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Uoya Eikichi, aratame and date seal 1956 (Ansei 3, month 9), mid print, the wood grain in the sky still clearly visible, the red tones of the signature and series title cartouche slightly faded, indentation visible in the outline left above the forest (compare sheet p. 147, Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler, Hiroshige, Meisho Edo hyakkei, Munich 2011): on the “Wide Street” (Hirokoji) a group of women with conspicuously red and white patterned umbrellas walk by, watched by a group of samurais. The imposing building of the Matsuzakaya textile store is visible on the right. In the background is the forest temple district of Kaneiji in Ueno. Minimally wavy and stained, trimmed outside the publisher’s seal and aratame and date seals, mounted, 35.7 x 23.5 cm, framed, (CT)
