(1733–1811)
Male nude with raised arms, reclining; a study of a martyr (?), red chalk on laid paper, 42,5 x 54 cm, fixed to support, browned, foxing, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Auction sale Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, No. 107, lot 6554 (as Jakob Matthias Schmutzer); Private collection, Italy.
The present drawing could have been made by a pupil of Jakob Matthias Schmutzer who copied an original drawing by Schmutzer for study reasons. The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna keeps a large number of male nude studies in red and black chalks, which were all signed by the artist. (Inv. Nr. HZ 6224–6234; 6238–6242). The posture of the figure and the hatchings recall Schmutzer’s drawing technique, but the somewhat briddle tracing lines of the contours point to the hand of a pupil who may have worked after a drawing by Schmutzer.
