Born in Genoa in 1858, Giovanni Battista Torriglia moved to Florence to complete his artistic training. There he studied under Nicolo Barabino who had a great influence on him. He was above all a genre painter. He was keen to show the happiness of the sitters like his contemporaries Gaetano Chierici and Eugenio Zampighi. These genre scenes were popular among the raising bourgeoisie. His paintings were much admired for his sensitive depictions of domestic life such as the present lot. Often the setting for his paintings was the interior of a family house. He can be considered one of the most celebrated Italian genre painters of the 19th century.
