Lot No. 515

Andrea Tavernier

Andrea Tavernier - 19th Century Paintings

(Turin 1858–1932 Grottaferrata)
The Young Seamstress, signed A. Tavernier, oil on canvas, 55x 65 cm, framed

Provenance:
Galleria d’Arte Fogliato, Turin;
Private Collection Italy.

Andrea Tavernier was born in Turin. He studied under Andrea Gastaldi at the local Accademia Albertina. He established his reputation with the landscape “Aurea Primaverili” at the 1884 Promotrice of Turin. In 1888 he exhibited “Contrasti” at the Promotrice, which was reproduced in engraving for the catalogue. He visited Rome and the Adriatic coast to find subjects for his paintings. He frequently exhibited at the Venice Biennale where 36 of his works were presented in 1922.

The present lot depicts a young girl sewing in a landscape. This is a typical subject for the artist, who painted the daily life of rural folk based on direct observation. The strokes here are applied loosely with dense impasto. The luminous tonality without intense colour is typical of Tavernier’s execution.
