Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton

Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton - Old Master Paintings

(Brussels 1668-1754 Augsburg)
A pair of forest floors with insects and reptiles,
oil on canvas laid down on board, each 39 x 28.5 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Carl Wilhelm de Hamilton lived in southern Germany where he worked as court painter to the Margrave of Baden-Baden and the Prince Bishop of Augsburg. He specialised in sous bois still lifes populated by insects, amphibians and reptiles.

The present paintings demonstrate De Hamilton’s ability to combine scientific accuracy in the observation of animals and plants with a balanced harmony of composition and colours. The arrangement of flora and fauna was certainly not left to chance, for as a rule many of the animals and plants depicted by the artist had symbolical and biblical connotations.
Other versions slightly varying from the present paintings exist, such as in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. For further reading on the artist; see M. Lörz, Karl Wilhelm de Hamilton und seine Tierstudien im Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, in: H. I. Friesen et al. (eds.), Von Schönheit und Tod. Tierstillleben von der Renaissance bis zur Moderne, Karlsruhe/Heidelberg/Berlin 2011.
