C. Hirsch

C. Hirsch - Old Master Paintings

(active in Austria, first half of the 18th Century)
Maria Theresia as King of Hungary on horseback during her Coronation in Preßburg (1741),
oil on canvas, 45 x 33 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany

Little is known of this artist. The present hand might be identical with C. Hirsch the Younger, who painted the portrait of an aristocratic young lady (dated 1730, sold at Helbing, Munich, 1896, lot 233). Another version of the present painting (Galéria mésta Bratislavy, inv. no. A 583) was included in the exhibition entitled Maria Theresia und die Kunst at the Belvedere in Vienna from 30 June – 5 November 2017 (see fig. 1).

At the time a reigning Queen in Hungary was not allowed so Maria Theresia was crowned as King of Hungary. According to tradition she was crowned in Preßburg (today Bratislava). The present painting shows the ride of the new King over a heap, made from earth from all Hungarian counties, an important part of the crowning ceremony.
