(Chateau-Cambresis 1869-1954 Nice) "The Dancer", 1949, colour lithograph on thin wove paper, signature stamp Henri Matisse, image size 48 x 54.5 cm, sheet size 59.5 x 75.5 cm, from: 'School Prints European Series', printed by W. S. Cowell Ltd. and published by School Prints Ltd. with typeset inscription, slightly browned, several soft creases, water stain to the lower left sheet edge, (EW)
'The School Prints' were an educational project initiated by Brenda Rawnsley for school children in Great Britain. Three series were issued between 1946 and 1949. The large print runs of around 3,000 copies enabled contemporary art to be widely disseminated to elementary schools. While the first two series included only works by British artists, 'The European Series' featured lithographs by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Raoul Dufy, Henry Moore, and the present work by Henri Matisse.
