Lot No. 87

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Asian Art

Nissaka, Sayo no nakayama, (Nissaka: Sayo Mountain Pass), sheet no. 26 from the series: “Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi” (Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road, also called the First Tokaido or Great Tokaido, nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publishers: Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeido) and Tsuruya Kiemon (Senkakudo), censor seal kiwame, dated c. 1833-34 (tenpo 4-5). Comparing sheet no. 06.1308MFA, Boston and Hiroshige, 53 Stations of the Tokaido Gyosho, Cristina Berna and Eric Thomson, p. 143, the present sheet could be an intermediate print, since the yellow of the path is still good, whereas the grey bokashi to the left and right of the path is barely recognizable. The foliage is slightly squashed. The present lot shares with the Boston sheet the tiny indentation on the right in the outer perimetral margin, as well as a thickening in the lower perimetral line just before the left indented corner. The paper is flattened, the centre fold has been visibly restored on the reverse, slightly stained, full margins, 24.6 x 37 cm, mounted, (CT)
