Lot No. 228

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Asian Art

Fujisawa, Nanki no Matsubara hidari no Fuji (Fuji on the left at Nanki no Matsubara), no. 7 from the series: "Gosjusan tsugi meisho zue" (Famous Views of the 53 Stations, also called Vertical Tokaido), nishiki-e, signed: Hiroshige hitsu, publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo (Koeido), dated 1855 (Ansei 2, month 7). The present sheet is an early or intermediate print. Although the colours are slightly pale, the rich bokashi of the sky, the subtle detailing of the black mountain peak on the right and especially the clearly visible kimetsubashi (wood grain) would suggest this (cf. sheet no. 11.30257, MFA, Boston). In addition, in the lower part of the Fuji on the margin the outline characteristically becomes slightly thinner. Atached to support, some browning and staining, colours slightly pale, full margins, mounted, 37.5 x 25.8 cm, (CT)
