Johann Friedrich Hennings studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. His teacher was Oswald Achenbach, one of the most important landscape painters in Europe.
From then on, Hennings also concentrated on landscape and genre scenes. Study trips took him to Italy, among other places, for a long period of time. From 1861 onwards, he lived in Munich. Among his works are numerous motifs from this city as well as surrounding places such as Regensburg or Passau. Many pictures show pleasant excursions or hunts in summer forest landscapes, with the gentlemen dressed in splendid rococo costumes. Venice with its canals and magnificent palaces also provided one of his favourite backdrops.
