The present panel was recognised as a 'work by a Westphalian master, executed in around 1480' by Fritz Goldkuhle, Director of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn in 1974.
The painting depicts Christ, held by soldiers and clad in contemporary armour. The helmet worn by the figure in the foreground is typical of both Germany and the Low Countries at the end of the fifteenth century.
The expressive quality of Pontius Pilate’s face and the highly defined hands are characteristic of the Westphalian school identified by Goldkuhle, while the gilded basin in which Pilate will wash his hands, is modelled with relatively refined lighting effects.
